What is High Blood Pressure?
On August 11, 2024, the "Chinese Guidelines for the Prevention and Treatment of Hypertension (2024 Revision)" was officially released. The definition of hypertension:
Office blood pressure ≥140/90 mmHg without antihypertensive medication; or home blood pressure ≥135/85 mmHg;
or 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure ≥130/80 mmHg, daytime blood pressure ≥135/85 mmHg, nighttime blood pressure ≥120/70 mmHg
Blood Pressure Lowering Recommendations
- Exercise regularly
- Reduce salt intake
- Lose weight
- Quit smoking
- Reduce alcohol consumption
- Take antihypertensive medication (sometimes multiple medications are needed)
- Continue taking medication even when feeling well
Lifestyle Changes (Applicable to All Patients)
- DASH Diet
- Eat more fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy products
- Reduce red meat, sweets, and salt intake
- Regular exercise
- Weight loss
- Reduce alcohol consumption
- Quit smoking
- Stress management
Medication Treatment
- Use one or more antihypertensive medications in combination
- May require lifelong medication
- Regular blood pressure monitoring and medication adjustment
